The first of many symptoms of bad gas caps is probably a loose gas cap or a gas cap that won’t completely tighten. This may not seem important at first, but without an air-tight seal, the fuel system can be exposed to grime and dirt. If the gas cap isn’t sealing properly, try checking the rubber seal to be sure it’s not missing or brittle. If you drive an older car or truck, be sure the metal gas cap is not damaged or bent. Both can cause gas cap issues and might require buying a replacement from the manufacturer.
What concerns can an ill-fitting gas cap cause, well a check engine light? A loose gas cap will not only let fuel vapors escape the gas tank, but it can also let in dirt and grime. These gasoline vapors may cause an error in the emissions system, which would light up the check engine light. Grime that gets into the fuel tank can also damage the fuel injectors over time.
